Civil Project: MFI Engineering Yard Build

A Full Civil Build for MFI Engineering - From Bare Ground to Finished Yard

When MFI Engineering needed a hard-wearing yard built to handle a fleet of fuel tankers, they called Abbotts. What started as a quote to supply and lay concrete grew into a full civil build - earthworks, ground stabilisation, drainage prep, large-scale concrete pours, line marking, and landscaping. The whole job was managed by our team from start to finish, with most of our crew on the tools throughout.

It is the kind of project that shows where Abbotts is today. We built our name on drainage, but our civil capability is now one of the biggest parts of what we do.

The Brief - Concrete Around a Commercial Building

MFI Engineering came to us looking for a price on the concrete work around their site. A straightforward yard pour, on paper.

We sent a team out to scope it properly before quoting. That site visit changed the job. The existing ground simply was not up to the task. For a yard that needed to take the daily weight of fuel tankers, the sub-base had to be sorted before a single bag of cement landed on site.

We went back to the client with an honest answer: do it once, do it right. They gave us the green light to take on the lot.

What We Actually Did

The job grew into a complete civil package. Here is what Abbotts handled on site:

  • Site preparation and excavation - undercutting the entire site to remove unsuitable ground

  • Hard fill supply, placement and compaction - building a stable platform that will hold up for years

  • Levels and grading - working out the correct heights for both the concrete finish and the drainage falls

  • Drainage design input - we did not lay the drains ourselves on this one, but we set out cesspit locations and worked alongside the drainlayer to make sure stormwater flowed correctly

  • Concrete pours in stages - the pad was poured in planned sections, with each pour managed by our team

  • Line marking - clear truck movement lines for the fuel tanker fleet

  • Drains and barriers - finishing details to keep the yard safe and operational

  • Landscaping - the tidy-up around the perimeter to finish the job properly

Most importantly, we project managed the whole thing. MFI Engineering had one point of contact - Abbotts - and the job got delivered.

The Challenges

Unsuitable ground

The biggest curveball was what we found under the surface. Once we started digging, it was clear the existing material was not going to support a working yard for fuel tankers. We pulled it all out, brought in clean hard fill, and compacted it back in lifts to get a solid base.

That call added time and cost to the original scope, but it was the right one. Trying to lay a slab on poor ground only ends one way - cracks, slumps, and an expensive repair down the track.

Working through winter

Most of the job ran through the wet months. Weather and access can throw the best programme out the window on a civil site. The MFI Engineering team were great to work with on this - flexible on timing, which let us pour when conditions were right rather than forcing it. That flexibility paid off in the finish.

Big pours

The concrete went down in staged pours, some of them sizeable. That meant tight coordination on the day - readymix scheduling, finishing crews, and quality control across the slab. The whole Abbotts team was on the tools to get each pour placed, screeded, and finished before it went off.

The Result

A finished yard that does exactly what it needs to do - take the weight of a fuel tanker fleet day in, day out, with proper falls, clear line marking, and a tidy edge. The client was rapt.

So much so that the neighbouring property, owned by a connected business, has now engaged Abbotts to deliver a similar yard build. We are handling the design and full delivery on that one too.

Why This Project Matters

Abbotts started in drainage. That has not changed - we are still the team Auckland calls when something needs unblocking, CCTV inspection, or a stormwater fix. But the business has grown, and civil work is now a big part of what we do every day.

The MFI Engineering project shows what that civil capability looks like in practice:

  • A team that scales - most of our crew were on this job at various stages, including hands on the tools spreading concrete

  • The gear - excavators, hard fill plant, vac trucks for safe digging near services, and CCTV for verifying drainage runs

  • The experience - decades of working on Auckland sites means we know what good ground looks like, what bad ground looks like, and what to do about it

  • End-to-end project management - one team, one point of contact, one accountable contractor from site visit to handover

If you are a developer, builder, or commercial property owner with a yard, car park, hardstand, or new development that needs a civil contractor who will actually pick up the phone and show up - that is us.
